Brave Catholic Archbishop Jose Gomez

What a terrific example for the Catholic hierarchy. It is heartening to see a Catholic Archbishop take decisive action against another senior Catholic cleric.  For those of us who work in the sexual assault field with victims of clergy abuse it defies logic that the issue of the sexual assault of small children and other vulnerable people has been treated in a dismissive manner.

Perhaps Archbishop Jose Gomez's critics in the United States are right that he only acted because a court order released 124 files of which 82 contained child abuse allegations.  However, he did act decisively relieving the previous Cardinal of administrative and public duties and insisting on the resignation of the Cardinal's former right hand man regional bishop of Santa Barbara.
It would be good to see similar action in Australia against a number of senior Catholics who have ignored allegations and protected paedophile priests.
