Melbourne Response

The Melbourne Response, although intended to provide assistance and support victims of abuse by Catholic Church personnel, has always been a cause of distress for a large number of victims. The cause of distress has been the signing away of legal rights if accessing compensation.
A heavily edited version of  the independent review into the Melbourne Response commissioned by Archbishop Denis Hart in August 2014 was given to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse on Friday 25th February 2017. It contained 17 recommendations one of which was that victims should no longer be required to sign a deed of release in order to access monetary payments. This will be a good step forward although far too long coming as the Church suppressed the report for over a year.
