Catholic Church pays out $276 million in compensation for sexual abuse of children

The Royal Commission heard recently that the number of claims for compensation against the Catholic Church  has risen to 4445 with 2854 resulting in compensation being paid.  A number of cases are still proceeding.  The concern with these figures, which are in themselves unacceptably high, is that we know from Australian Bureau of Statistics data that only 1 in 10 people report sexual assault.
Counsel assisting the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, Gail Furness, noted that the number of cases is likely to be greater and forty-six percent of claims concerned schools. If in fact the number of cases is 10 times great than those reported then we are looking at around 44 000 possible cases.  It is hard to see, when this has involved many schools, how the Catholic education system is seen as a viable option for 20 percent of Australian children.
