Underage Marriage

The Melbourne imam who officiated at a marriage of a 14 year old girl and a man 20 years older than her has not gone to to jail. He was released on a two year recognisance release order. The maximum penalty for this crime is 6 months jail time.
Whilst not usually wanting severe penalties for crimes and favouring rehabilitation programs, I think it is a shame in this case that an example was not made of the imam to send a message that under age marriages are not acceptable in Australia. It was noted in the newspaper reports that the imam had shown no remorse and had gone to a contested hearing.  I think it is important that it is made very clear that underage marriage in Australia will attract serious penalties and that is not what has happened on this occasion.
